Radiofrequency Microneedling (RFM)
Radiofrequency microneedling itself works by combining controlled microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered directly into the skin at adjustable depths. In addition to the microneedling process, radiofrequency energy is delivered directly into the skin at controlled depths. This targeted thermal stimulation intensifies the collagen response by activating fibroblasts more effectively, allowing collagen and elastin production to be stimulated more deeply and precisely than with microneedling alone. The treatment also creates micro-channels within the skin, enabling targeted serums and regenerative products to penetrate more effectively. Over time, this leads to improvements in skin firmness, texture, resilience, and overall quality, without adding volume or altering facial shape.
Collagen stimulation is particularly important as we age, and especially for women entering perimenopause and menopause, when collagen loss can accelerate due to hormonal changes. Radiofrequency microneedling allows collagen production to be actively stimulated at this stage, supporting skin structure and health in a proactive way rather than waiting for more advanced laxity or thinning to develop. Radiofrequency Microneedling can be combined with other treatments & is often recommended as part of a personalised treatment plan as almost all patients I see in clinic would benefit from RFM.
At Rejuvenation by Dr Morag, we invest heavily in the equipment used within clinic, ensuring that treatments are delivered using medical-grade technology that is safe, reliable, and clinically effective. Choosing the right devices is a fundamental part of our practice ethos, as treatment outcomes and patient safety are directly linked to the quality of the technology being used.
For radiofrequency microneedling, treatments are performed using the Focus Dual platform from Lynton Lasers, the UK’s leading manufacturer of laser, light, and energy-based aesthetic devices. Lynton are specialists in aesthetic technology and are supported by one of the largest teams of UK-based doctors, scientists, engineers, and aestheticians working in this field.
With over 25 years’ experience in developing and manufacturing medical-grade devices for a wide range of cosmetic and medical skin concerns, Lynton are recognised as experts in designing technology that delivers consistently strong clinical results. Their equipment is used extensively across private medical clinics, NHS settings, and healthcare facilities throughout the UK, reflecting their emphasis on safety, regulation, and evidence-based outcomes.
Alongside their technology, Lynton provide comprehensive practitioner training that combines both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience. This training is developed in collaboration with leading academic institutions and ensures clinicians have an in-depth understanding of skin anatomy, tissue response, and energy-based treatments. This allows treatments to be delivered safely while achieving optimal results.
Lynton have also received multiple industry awards recognising the quality, safety, and clinical performance of their devices, providing further reassurance that we are using some of the most advanced and well-supported technology available within UK medical aesthetics.
For suitable patients, Radiofrequency Microneedling can be combined with HIFU as part of a Focus Dual Fusion treatment plan (see HIFU treatment section for further information). We are also very excited to now offer exosomes in clinic which can be added on to any microneedling treatment to support skin repair, enhance results and promote faster recovery.
Radiofrequency microneedling uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels within the skin. Radiofrequency energy is delivered through these needles at carefully selected depths, allowing targeted stimulation of collagen and elastin production, while preserving the surface of the skin.
Radiofrequency Microneedling is much more effective when delivered as a course of treatments rather than a single treatment, as collagen stimulation happens gradually and requires repeated stimulation of the fibroblasts to enhance their production of collagen & elastin. Most patients benefit from a course of 3-6 treatments, typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on skin quality and treatment goals.
Treatment settings are tailored to the individual based on skin quality, treatment area, and clinical goals. RFM may be performed as a standalone treatment or incorporated into a wider collagen-stimulating or rejuvenation plan.
Optional enhancement – Exosomes
As part of radiofrequency microneedling treatment, there is the option to incorporate exosomes to enhance skin repair and regeneration.
Exosomes are tiny, highly active cell-signalling molecules derived from stem cells. They play an important role in communication between cells and are involved in processes such as tissue repair, regeneration and inflammation control. When applied to the skin immediately after microneedling, they are able to penetrate effectively through the micro-channels created by the treatment.
Used alongside microneedling, exosomes can help to enhance treatment outcomes by supporting collagen stimulation, improving overall skin quality and texture, and promoting a healthier, more resilient skin response. They may also help to reduce post-treatment inflammation and support faster recovery.
Exosomes are particularly beneficial for patients looking to optimise results, minimise downtime, or address concerns such as fine lines, pigmentation, skin luminosity and, where appropriate, scalp and hair health. Suitability is discussed during consultation, and exosomes are offered selectively as part of a personalised treatment plan.
Radiofrequency microneedling can be used on a wide range of areas where skin quality, firmness, or texture is a concern, including:
- Face
- Neck
- Décolletage
- Jawline and lower face
- Under-eye area (in selected cases)
- Abdomen (including post-pregnancy or post-C-section skin changes)
- Upper arms (“bingo wings”)
- Thighs
- Areas of scarring or skin laxity
Suitability for treatment areas is always assessed during consultation.
RFM is generally well tolerated. During treatment, patients may experience a sensation of pressure, warmth, or mild prickling. Following treatment, it is common to have temporary redness, warmth, mild swelling, and tenderness in the treated area. These effects typically settle over a few days. Mild bruising can occasionally occur.
Aftercare advice is provided to support healing and minimise downtime.
Each radiofrequency microneedling appointment typically takes 45–60 minutes, including preparation, treatment, and aftercare advice.
Some early improvements in skin texture or tone may be noticed within a few weeks of treatment. However, because RFM works by stimulating collagen production, results are usually more noticeable after completion of the full course.
Improvements continue to develop over the following weeks to months as new collagen forms, resulting in firmer, smoother, and more resilient skin.
We are also very excited to now offer exosomes in clinic which can be added on to any microneedling treatment to support skin repair, enhance results and promote faster recovery. When exosomes are used alongside microneedling, patients find that skin recovery is quicker and early improvements in skin quality may be noticed sooner.
After completing a full course of Radiofrequency Microneedling, results typically continue to improve for several months as new collagen forms. We naturally lose around 1.5 percent of our collagen each year, and this rate of loss can accelerate at certain stages of life. This becomes particularly relevant during periods such as perimenopause and menopause, when collagen levels are known to decline more rapidly due to hormonal changes.
By actively stimulating collagen, the skin is encouraged to produce more collagen than it would have otherwise. Once collagen has been stimulated and formed, you will always have more collagen than you would have had without treatment. This is why the concept of collagen banking is important – newly formed collagen contributes to the overall collagen reserves within the skin, helping to support skin quality and structure over time.
After completing the initial course of 3-6 treatments, due to deeper, more intensive collagen remodelling, maintenance is needed less often then traditional microneedling (microneedling pen without radiofrequency) & are typically recommended every 6 – 12 months to sustain the collagen-boosting results and skin tightening effects, although this is dependent on patient age, skin quality & skin concerns. Some individuals may need them up to every 18 months depending on their age and skin concerns.
Combining RFM with other treatments & the option of Focus Dual Fusion – Combining Radiofrequency Microneedling with HIFU
Radiofrequency Microneedling can be combined with other treatments & is often recommended as part of a personalised treatment plan as almost all patients I see in clinic would benefit from RFM. For suitable patients, radiofrequency microneedling can be combined with HIFU as part of a Focus Dual Fusion treatment plan.
Radiofrequency microneedling works within the more superficial layers of the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin, improving skin quality, firmness and texture. HIFU works at deeper structural levels, including the SMAS layer, to support lifting and tightening.
By combining these treatments, multiple layers of the skin can be treated in a single, well planned approach. This layered stimulation supports long term collagen production and collagen banking, helping to build and preserve collagen that would otherwise be lost with ageing.
Where appropriate, combining treatments also reduces overall clinical time compared to performing them separately, meaning Focus Dual Fusion is offered at a discounted price. Suitability is always assessed during consultation, as not all patients require treatment at every depth.
