Microneedling (Pen)
Microneedling, also known as a collagen stimulating treatment, is a regenerative skin treatment designed to stimulate the skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin. It involves the use of fine, medical grade needles to create controlled micro-injuries within the skin, triggering the body’s natural repair and renewal processes and resulting in healthier, stronger and more resilient skin over time.
The treatment also creates hundreds of tiny micro-channels within the skin, allowing targeted serums and regenerative products to penetrate more effectively. This enhanced delivery helps to further improve skin quality and overall treatment outcomes.
We are also very excited to now offer exosomes in clinic which can be added on to any microneedling treatment to support skin repair, enhance results and promote faster recovery.
Microneedling is performed using a medical grade microneedling pen, which creates controlled micro-channels within the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate fibroblasts, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin as part of the skin’s natural healing response.
Microneedling is much more effective when delivered as a course of treatments rather than a single treatment, as collagen stimulation happens gradually and requires repeated stimulation of the fibroblasts to enhance their production of collagen & elastin. Most patients benefit from a course of 3-6 treatments, typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart, depending on skin quality and treatment goals.
Microneedling can be performed as a standalone treatment or combined with other regenerative treatments where appropriate. There is also the option to enhance results by incorporating exosomes, which can be discussed during consultation.
Microneedling can be used to address a wide range of skin concerns, including:
- Fine lines and early signs of ageing
- Uneven skin texture
- Dull or tired looking skin
- Mild acne scarring
- Enlarged pores
- Pigmentation and uneven skin tone
- Loss of skin firmness
- Skin health maintenance and collagen banking
Suitability for microneedling is assessed during consultation, as treatment depth and approach are tailored to individual skin needs.
Microneedling can be used on both the face and body, including:
- Face
- Neck
- Décolletage
- Hands
- Scalp, where appropriate, to support scalp and hair health
Microneedling is generally well tolerated. During treatment, patients may feel a light scratching or vibrating sensation. Following treatment, it is common to experience temporary redness, warmth and mild sensitivity, similar to mild sunburn. These effects usually settle within 24 – 48 hours. Mild swelling or pinpoint bleeding can occasionally occur.
Aftercare advice is provided to support healing and recovery.
A microneedling appointment typically takes 45 to 60 minutes, including preparation, treatment and aftercare advice.
Some patients notice early improvements in skin brightness and texture within one to two weeks of treatment. However, because microneedling works by stimulating collagen, results develop gradually & it often takes 8-12 weeks to see more noticeable improvement.
Improvements become more noticeable with each treatment, with the best results usually seen after completion of the full course, once collagen production has been adequately stimulated.
After a course of microneedling, results typically continue to improve for several months as new collagen forms. We naturally lose around 1.5 percent of our collagen each year, and this rate of loss can increase at certain stages of life.
By stimulating collagen, you are encouraging the skin to produce more collagen than it would have otherwise. This concept is often referred to as collagen banking, and becomes particularly important during periods such as perimenopause and menopause, when collagen levels decline more rapidly.
After completing an initial series of 3–6 professional microneedling pen sessions, maintenance treatments are typically recommended every 3 to 6 months to maintain results. Some individuals may require maintenance sessions as often as every 3 months for deep wrinkles or acne scars, while others may only need them once or twice a year for general skin rejuvenation.
Optional enhancement – Exosomes
As part of microneedling treatment, there is the option to incorporate exosomes to enhance skin repair and regeneration.
Exosomes are tiny, highly active cell-signalling molecules derived from stem cells. They play an important role in communication between cells and are involved in processes such as tissue repair, regeneration and inflammation control. When applied to the skin immediately after microneedling, they are able to penetrate effectively through the micro-channels created by the treatment.
Used alongside microneedling, exosomes can help to enhance treatment outcomes by supporting collagen stimulation, improving overall skin quality and texture, and promoting a healthier, more resilient skin response. They may also help to reduce post-treatment inflammation and support faster recovery.
Exosomes are particularly beneficial for patients looking to optimise results, minimise downtime, or address concerns such as fine lines, pigmentation, skin luminosity and, where appropriate, scalp and hair health.
